Twelve years ago today, on a beautiful late summer morning, 2,977 innocent people lost their lives after 19 terrorists hijacked planes that ultimately crashed into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, PA.

Of those souls lost, 246 had been aboard the four aircraft; 125 were at the Pentagon; and 2,606 were in or around the World Trade Center.

The New York City Fire Department lost 340 firefighters, a chaplain and two paramedics; the NYPD lost 23 officers; the Port Authority Police Department lost 37 officers; and eight EMTs and paramedics from private emergency medical services units were killed.

Whether rushing into the buildings to save lives or simply showing up for work that day, every one of the men and women killed on Sept. 11 were loved, cherished and irreplaceable.

They are mourned. They are missed. They are not forgotten.

We have not forgotten.
